Estimate portions without a food scale: hand guides and honesty
You will not always have a scale. Estimate portions with repeatable visual rules, then log consistently so your calorie tracker stays directionally right.
Hand guides (rough)
Many coaches use palms for protein, fists for produce, cupped hands for carbs, and thumbs for fats—as starting heuristics, not laws. Adjust for hand size and cultural foods.
Round, do not fantasize
If unsure, round up on oils, cheese, and nut butters—where underestimation is common.
Pair with photos for learning
Occasionally photograph plates to calibrate estimates. Over time your food diary entries improve without obsessive weighing.
